Power Over Pain: COVID Science - It's Not All Black & White, Lots of Gray; Do These 3 Things Now!

Filmed live at the Hive, Atlanta, Georgia, on July 22, 2020. Dr. Baxter discusses what we know for certain about COVID-19, what has changed over time as we learn more (quickly!), and what you can do to stay healthy.

Words and phrases of the day: sequelae; fomites; clinical equipoise.

One of the things we know for certain about this virus is that it enters through the nose. Since we know that, we know that wearing a face-covering (that covers mouth AND nose) is an easy precaution that everyone should take.

There's a lot more that's less certain. Scientific observation by Dr. Baxter: "Science is messy but methodical." Dr. Baxter covers these uncertainties/gray areas:

1) What's the CFR? (Case Fatality Rate). Dr. Baxter estimates it will be around 1% and this number skews older.

2) What percent of the population has COVID-19? It may be 4 - 20 TIMES the number of diagnosed cases. This makes calculating the CFR tricky.

3) What are the sequelae (long term health impacts) from infection? How long do they last?

4) What's the R0 ("R-naught"), the basic reproduction number of COVID? Knowing this number tells us what percentage immunization we need for herd immunity. (E.g., for measles, the R0 is 15 - 18 and we know we need 95% immunization rate 95% for herd immunity.)

5) How much will children spread COVID-19?

6) What role do fomites play in spreading COVID-19? Droplets? Aerosols?

DO THESE 3 THINGS - A few pieces of concrete advice from Dr. Baxter:

1) #WearAMask

2) Get your annual flu vaccine on the early side of availability

3) Prevent stuff (aerosols, droplets) from getting up your nose.
