Back and Neck Pain: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Dr. Badiola and Dr. Igolnikov, Penn Spine Center physicians, addresses all of your back and neck pain questions. The physicians at Penn Medicine will assess, diagnose your condition and develop a customized treatment plan.

The Penn Spine Center is one of the most comprehensive facilities of its kind, offering multidisciplinary treatment offerings for a variety of back and neck conditions.

Our team consists of leaders across multiple disciplines that include Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neurophysiology, Orthopaedics, Pain Medicine, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), and Behavioral Medicine.

The best way to know where your pain is coming from is to receive a physical examination by a Penn Medicine physician.

Key Things Patients Need to Know:

• If you experience fever and chills associated with your back pain, seek medical attention immediately.

• Weakness or numbness down the leg can be symptoms of pinched nerves in your back—a more serious condition.

• Location of the symptom may not indicate the origin of the problem.

• Most back pain resolves on its own in under four weeks.

• If symptoms persist over four weeks, you may need to seek medical attention from a physical medicine rehab doctor, or surgeon that specializes in spine care.

Types of Treatments:

• Depending on the severity of the pain, you may need physical therapy for a few weeks, anti-inflammatories, or non-invasive injections (the procedure takes less than 10 minutes).

After your physical examination, the physician will determine which treatment plan is right for you.

The benefits of having your spine care at the Penn Spine Center is that there is a comprehensive treatment team, which includes physical therapists, interventionists, as well as surgeons.
