Weightlifting Belt for Low Back Pain? | Should You Use One?

Weightlifting belts for low back pain is a common topic and many individuals are unsure if or how they should use these.

.

Here I am discussing with one of my clients Alicia from Texas about the principle or intent behind weightlifting belts as a whole. Alicia is doing great in the program and wanted to make sure she is capable of properly doing things on her own without a belt or other tools.

.

Weightlifting belts can be beneficial for some or harmful for others in the long run depending on how you use them.

.

Having a reliance on anything for your low back pain is not necessarily a great thing, however if psychologically a belt provides you support and confidence in certain situations then no harm done!

.

What you don’t want to do is use belts as a crutch and not reinforce strength or stability in areas that it is needed!

.

🔑 Overall, I would recommend the usage of belts for psychological reasons and as long as you’re able to fit two fingers between your body and the belt so that you have the ability to expand into it and generate proper intra-abdominal pressure. This will result in proper stability through the low back and reinforce the right patterns. I would not recommend the usage of belts as a crutch to make up for poor stability, and putting on a belt too tight could actually negatively affect these aspects. Now let’s fix your low back!
