Yoga for lower back pain - part 1: Stretching out from child's pose

Every once in a blue moon my lower back (lumbar, sacrum) completely seizes up so that I can't stand upright, or walk, and that's exactly what it did half way through an online class this morning. In this recording I'm about six hours and a couple of doses of Ibuprofen and paracetamol deep into an episode, as I work my way through the practice I've used for many years to sooth my lower back and keep it moving as it slowly releases and heals.

In this very slow forward-fold oriented class, completely down on the mat you MUST pick and mix the movements to suit you and go at the pace you need to. The session is consists of variations of a few postures growing out of supported child's pose, cat-cow, melting heart, and dolphin. We will be resting into these postures for longer periods of time.

KIT:

- Bolster (or spare rolled up mat/thick blanket/cushions/pillows).

- Cushion for seated postures

PLEASE BE CAREFUL: This class is designed with muscular spasms in mind, consult your doctor if you have a medical condition/injury. Everyone has a different experience of back pain, and we each bring different levels of experience as well as existing strength and mobility to our practice, even in the midst of pain management.
