Dangers of a Diagnosis | Low Back Pain Podcast #20

In this episode, I discuss the potentially dangerous effects a diagnosis can bring. Just like kids like to brag about their injuries, or who has the most broken bones, this can carry into adulthood and cause certain individuals to seek a label they can identify with, bring up at every opportune moment, and ultimately consume them. A typical medical diagnosis is usually filled with scary words and the phrasing of this is crucial as to not cause more harm than good. Disc herniation, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, are things all of my online clients have that I work with but we make sure to not hold onto these labels and focus on what matters throughout our program. If the wrong person is providing this "diagnosis", and the wrong person is receiving it, then chronic pain will often be the result as that individual will turn this diagnosis into their identity and attach themselves to it almost as a trophy for bragging rights. We must understand the impact our words can have, and how we can rephrase our words to both satisfy the desire for our clients to understand the source of their issue in a non-threatening or impacting way. At times if our clients are not even asking to know what the "diagnosis" is, it may sometimes be best to not even bring it up! Let's focus on what is right with someone instead of what is wrong with them, and simply discuss the plan we have in place that will help them achieve their goals. After all, that's all that matters right? Results!
